24 Club - The 24 Game challenges students to use their skills of mathematical reasoning, pattern analysis, and mental computation. The challenge for the students is to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division along with the four numbers on the card and come to the solution of a positive 24. The students must use all the four numbers, but use each only once. We will also have fractions and integers along with the original game. The club is open to all grades and there is a Baltimore County tournament held each year in March for the students who win the school competition. The school competition will be held at the beginning of February. The students who win the school competition will receive a $50 savings bond from M&T bank and will have the opportunity to compete at the county competition for a $1,000 savings bond.

Basketball teams
Philosophy of Middle School Athletics: To provide an enjoyable educational experience for young adolescents based on their developmental characteristics and needs. The development of self-esteem, citizenship, responsibility and skills in cooperative and leadership behaviors are positive outcomes of appropriate middle-level athletic programs.

Requirements of Participating Schools
•  Participating schools shall each designate an administrator-in-charge of overseeing this basketball program who will serve as the primary contact person for all communications.
•  Participating schools must field both a separate boys' team and girls' team comprised of 8 th grade students only. Every aspect of the girls' program shall be equitable with the boys' program (i.e. uniforms, practice time, practice area, number of contests, coaches, expenses, etc.)
•  Players must have the Baltimore County Athletic Permit completed.
•  Baltimore County Athletic Permit form must be completed by the first day of practice, Tuesday, November 15, 2011. No paperwork, No try-outs, No exceptions.
•  All players must have a physical examination.
•  The Physical examination form must be completed by the first day of practice, Tuesday, November 15, 2011. No paperwork, No try-outs, No exceptions .
•  The high school academic eligibility standard (no more than one failing grade in the marking period prior to and during participation in a sport) shall be the minimum requirement for participation. Schools may employ more stringent academic requirements, if they so chose.
•  CMS academic requirements require all participants to have a “C” or better grade in all classes to participate in games. A grade sheet signed by all teachers must be submitted to the coaching staff the day before each scheduled game.
•  CMS coaching staff will supply all athletes with an appropriate grade sheet.

Requirements of Participating Players
•  The minimum Baltimore County Public Schools eligibility policy shall apply. (Schools can have more stringent requirements).
•  Only 8 th grade boys and 8 th grade girls are eligible to participate.
•  The team is an incentive or reward for students becoming successful in school.
•  The coach should exclude any contestant who, because of bad habits or improper conduct, would not represent the school in a becoming manner, and also exclude any contestant who has suffered serious illness or injury until that contestant is pronounced physically fit by the school physician or the attending physician.
•  When a student is willfully non-proficient in classwork or is guilty of poor citizenship, the student is ineligible to participate in this program.
•  In-school or out-of-school suspension will result in loss of all playing time in the next upcoming game.

There will be a very informal meeting for all interested 8 th grade boys and girls on Tuesday morning, September 20 th at 7:45 am in the gym. All necessary paperwork will be given out at this time. The first official day of practice is Tuesday, November 15, 2011.

Best Buddies - Students of all grade levels who are interested in forming lasting friendships with students who have an intellectual disability are encouraged to join Best Buddies. Best Buddies is a nonprofit international organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Students would estabilish friendships with students with intellectual disabilities within the school and maintain a minimum weekly contact with that person at school as well as particiapte in monthly group activities at school.  Those interested in Best Buddies should see Mrs. Cogdill or Mrs. Bracken for more information about joining. Black Saga Club
The students will learn and study African American history in order to prepare for the Baltimore County Black Saga competition in February and the state competition in March. Warren, Lutherville, and Padonia Elementary Schools have participated in the competition previously.

Chamber Orchestra - The CMS Chamber Orchestra is a small, auditioned, string orchestra made up of students in grades six, seven and eight. All Chamber Orchestra members are members of Cockeysville Classicals. We perform throughout the community and at our CMS concerts. Auditions are in October.

Clay Club - Clay Club is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders on a first come first serve basis. We will have two sessions. The first will be in the FALL from October – January. The second will be in the SPRING from February-May . Students have the opportunity to learn hand building clay techniques. Clay Club will run on Friday afternoons from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Cockeysville Classicals - Cockeysville Classicals is an after school group open to all strings players, we perform in several venues in and out of school and compete yearly at Music in the Parks held at Hershey Park. Cross Country Club - The Cross Country Club is a walking/running group. It meets on most Wednesdays, after school, from 2:40- 3:30 starting September 14th.  It is open to ALL students, regardless of age, gender or fitness level. There are some competitions scheduled but are not required of participants.

Dance - Dance Club meets every Wednesday morning starting September 7, 2011 and continuing through the entire year. Students will be learning swing dancing along with some of the other social dances such as, the waltz, tango and cha-cha.

Last year's Dance Club made quite an impression at the MAHPERD Convention that they have been asked back to instruct again. This year's MAHPERD Convention will be Friday, October 21, 2011 at the Hunt Valley Marriott Hotel. Time of the activity is yet to be determined. Friday is a Professional Study Day for teachers and schools will be closed to students. Students will need to be carpooled to this event.

The Gilman School and The Roland Park School have invited the Dance Club to teach 150 of their 8 th grade students in one huge assembly. The “Swing Fling Dancing Exhibition” will be held at The Gilman School Middle School Gym on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The time for this activity is 2:30-4:00 pm. Students will need permission to leave school at 1:30 pm on that day and they will also need transportation. Carpooling and permission forms for students will be set-up at a later date.

The Dance Club has also been invited back to “The Friday Night Swing Dance Club” at the Towson American Legion on Friday, December 16, 2011 from 9-11 pm. Students will need chaperones and transportation.

There is no sign up or required paper work for the students to participate in the morning Dance Club.

Destination Imagination - What is DI? You've heard of spelling bees, quiz bowls, robotics competitions and science fairs. In fact, there is probably a special event for every subject taught at school. Well, Destination ImagiNation is none of those things – and all of those things! Destination ImagiNation is a place where kids take what they know and what they are good at and learn to apply it to solve challenges, working together and cooperatively with a team and pushing the limits of imagination to best not their competition, but themselves.

Homework Club - CMS offers an after school teacher-supervised location in the CMS library for students to do homework, work on projects, use the computers for research or word processing, and get organized! Several teachers are on hand to coach/tutor students who may have questions or need assistance.  Library resources, such as computers and books are available as well. Students may sign in at the library and work in a quiet setting from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week . Transportation must be provided by parents/guardians; all students need to be picked up promptly. All students are welcome. CMS behavior rules apply.

Hoops For Heart - Hoops for Heart with be held on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 4-6:30pm. Activities will be very similar as last year's with adventure education challenge initiatives, basketball 3 point and Knock-out competitions, 3 on 3 b'ball tournament along with a 24 team table tennis tournament. There will also be floor hockey.

After the Hoops for Heart activities and games, CYC will sponsor their dance and activities from 7-10 pm. All money will be donated to The American Heart Association and the Hoops for Heart campaign.

Lipstock - Lipstock is an annual lip-synching competition amongst C.M.S. 8th graders. Lipstock auditions begin in April and students must be available to practice with their group after school. Mandatory Tue. & Fri. in May/Daily in June. The event is held at the end of the school year. There will be a matinee and an evening performance. Students compete to win prizes and have an amazing time in the process.

Math Counts - This is a group for students that excel in mathematics. The students meet weekly from October through March. Students solve 10 warm-up and 10 work-out problems each week to determine answers, share strategies, and prepare for competitions.

National Junior Art Honor Society - (NJAHS)
The NJAHS is a nationally recognized club sponsored by the National Art Education Association. The NJAHS is open to selected GT Art students in grades 7 and 8. Participants are required to maintain a B average (or higher) in art, participate in community service and assist with the promotion of art in the school, community and nation. Students have participated in activities such as: Harvest for the Hungry posters, murals for the Towson Business Association, creating a cougar logo in the school's office, Pinwheels for Peace, Angels for Soldiers, created displays within the school and provided art work county exhibits.

Painting Club - Painting Club  is an in depth after school exploration of color and the fundamentals of painting.  Students will learn basic and advanced techniques in watercolor.

Student will also understand how to use complement colors and aspects of mixing paint. Painting Club will be an all year workshop consisting of different sessions.  Students will begin with learning to set up painting palettes and identifying color hues and combinations.  We will start with basic wash techniques and how artist use them to achieve desired affects.  We will begin some observational paintings, moving into more complex and difficult subject matters to paint.

Painting Club will meet on  TUESDAY afternoons from 2:30- 3:30  in room 44

Quiz Bowl - Quiz Bowl is a team trivia competition for middle school students that tests a student's knowledge of current events, pop culture, sports, geography, politics, and history. Students can earn 5, 10 and 15 points depending on the level of difficulty of the question being asked. The basis of the program is the Weekly News Quiz Game, a national publication that provides the questions and basic rules. Cockeysville Quiz Bowl will compete against other middle school Quiz Bowl teams throughout the year.

SADD - SADD is the nation's dominate peer to peer youth prevention organization originally founded against drunk driving. SADD's approach now involves young people in informing, supporting and assisting their peers to have the best tools for making healthy decisions in all risky behavioral areas: drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, sex, cutting, drunk driving, seat belt use.

SADD members deliver education and prevention messages through school and community wide activities and campaigns. Meetings are held on a monthly basis to prepare for such events as Red Ribbon Week and Ghost Out Day. We believe in the power of our student members and their ability to influence other students to make good decisions leading to healthy lifestyles.

Scrapbook Club
The Scrapbook Club meets on Tuesday after school from 2:30-3:30. It is open to all students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Each week students will work on a variety of scrapbook ideas and techniques, with the hope of completing a finished album by the end of the school year. Students will need to provide their own scrapbook supplies and photographs.

The School Store is up and running again this year. Located just around the corner from the main office in the lower lobby. The School Store carries a variety of pens, pencils, highlighters, markers,and folders for student needs. The store is only open in the morning, before homeroom, so if you find you need some item to get through the day, check out the school store first thing in the morning.

Sports Intramurals - Offered by the Physical Education Department . Sports intramurals offer an opportunity for every child to participate after school in a variety of sports . Activities are directly related to the students' current physical education unit and/or student interest . Intramurals are Mondays (except the first Monday of the month) , 2:40-3:30, beginning September 19th.  Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/student

STEM Club - STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  We will meet Wednesday's after school in room 16, 2:30-3:30.  During club meetings students will be given challenges such as building the tallest tower, the strongest bridge, or build the paper airplane that can fly the longest.  Students will work together to solve these challenges.  A team of 5 students will be chosen to compete in the Baltimore County STEM Competition in February.

Student Government Association
The Student Government Association is a student-led service organization. The SGA provides a chance for members to develop leadership skills as they coordinate service projects for the school and community, and organize social activities to promote school spirit and pride. The council works through committees, each of which is responsible for a different aspect of school or community relations. The SGA also provides an opportunity for students to exchange ideas among the faculty and student body through its elected officials and representatives. Grade level representatives are elected for 7th and 8th grade.. Each homeroom class will also nominate a classroom representative and alternate who must attend meetings and perform the necessary duties. Additionally, meetings are open to any interested member of the CMS student body.

Harvest for the Hungry - Harvest for the Hungry "Kids Helping Kids," an official program of the Maryland State Department of Education, is a three-week non-perishable food collection campaign for Maryland schools that benefits food banks of Maryland. The program provides an opportunity for children to learn about hunger, collect food for the less fortunate, volunteer their time, and earn credit toward their service-learning requirements.

Student Leaders - Our leadership program involves training and activities designed with the purpose of developing and enhancing our identified students with leadership skills, knowledge and abilities. Student leaders, recommended by elementary and middle school staff, are role model students trained to make a difference by serving in a leader capacity at various school functions: serve as student representatives during American Education Week, student guides for children enrolled during the school year, and student leaders who participate in organizing the Parent and Student Orientations held each spring.

VOC - Voices of Cockeysville - VOC is a select after school enrichment mixed honor chorus of students selected by audition from grades 6, 7, and 8. VOC performs at the CMS Winter and Spring Choral Concerts. VOC also performs at local retirement homes and elementary schools as a community service project. VOC is open to any student who would enjoy singing more challenging music. VOC has consistently received superior ratings at the Baltimore County Choral Festival and The Music In The Parks Festival at Hersheypark.

Weight Training Intramural - Weight Training Intramural weight lifting will begin on Tuesday, October 4th .  It is available for boys and girls of all grade levels.  It is run from 7:05 am – 7:50 am in the weight room.  Students will learn appropriate lifting techniques, exercises, and safety practices while completing a full body work out. If students would like to participate they need to complete a parent permission form and turn it in to Mr. LeBlanc.  After October 4th, students may only begin on instructional days which are the first Tuesday of the month.  For maximum benefit regular attendance is encouraged.

WOC and Jazz Band - Winds of Cockeysville (WOC) is our after school Honor Band. It is comprised of approximately 60 musicians in all grade levels. Membership is by audition only. WOC meets once a week as a full ensemble, and once a week in smaller sectional rehearsals. They perform on all school concerts, the Cockeysville Area Festival, the Baltimore County High School Band Assessment, and each year they represent CMS at the annual Music in the Parks competition held at Hersheypark. WOC meets Wednesdays (2:40-4:00) for full rehearsals and generally Tuesdays or Thursdays (2:40-4:00) for sectionals. Sectionals rotate by instrument and can occur any day of the week. Once a month, the Wednesday rehearsal is extended to 5:00 pm followed by a pizza party. Jazz Band is another after school Honor Band open through audition only. The members of the Jazz Band rehearse after school on Thursdays, from 2:40-3:45pm. JAZZ BAND performs at all concerts and is frequently invited to perform out in the community at local elementary schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and senior centers. Students must demonstrate a good academic standing and a strong musical talent in order to be accepted into the after school programs (Jazz Band and/or WOC).
