Coordinated by the Maryland Humanities Council, History Day is a learning experience for students in grades 6 through 12, providing an opportunity for students to conduct in-depth research on a subject of interest and to share what they have learned through creative and original productions. Participating students, working as individuals or in teams, use information and insights gathered from libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews to draw their own conclusions about a topic's significance in history.

Students could select both their project subjects and formats – choosing among historical papers, exhibits, original performances, multimedia documentaries, and historical websites. All projects were required to relate to this year's theme: Debate & Diplomacy in History: Success, Failures, Consequences.

History Day is sponsored in Maryland by the Maryland State Department of Education, T. Rowe Price, Columbia Gas of Maryland, and the Maryland Department of Planning.

More than 240 students in grades 5-8 gathered at the Crowne Plaza in Timonium to compete in the prestigious mathematics tournament. “The support that M&T Bank provides is invaluable,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Joe A. “M&T Bank is proud to sponsor the 24 Challenge®. It is a great way for students to put their deductive reasoning skills to the test and build skills to apply when they enter the workforce in the future,” said Noel Carroll, M&T Bank's retail market manager for Greater Baltimore. “We believe supporting education helps build stronger communities.”
